The Pill and Missed Periods

Q: My girlfriend and I have been seeing each other for over a year and she is taking Cyclessa (28-day cycle). We had sex 2 days before her scheduled period, and now she is a day late on her period. What is going on? Is it even possible that she's pregnant? What do we need to do? Please help me.

M.L.

Dr. Donnica:
I am sorry to hear about this situation; I know it is VERY stressful.  The most important question to ask is whether your girlfriend was taking her pills every single day without fail. If she was, there is probably nothing to worry about.  Even on the Pill, periods can be a day or two late or can sometimes be missed altogether.

Even if she was taking her pills properly every single day, there are occasional failures, particularly if she was taking another medication, such as certain kinds of antibiotics, which make the Pill less effective.  If she doesn't get her period within a week, she can take a home pregnancy test to reassure you both.  If it is positive, she should see her physician ASAP.  If it is negative, she should continue taking her pills daily, but repeat the home pregnancy test if she misses her next period.

Good luck!
